Whilst it was disappointing to not meet in person and celebrate our 3rd Birthday, we still had a wonderful meeting via Zoom in January.
We were transported back to the Victorian era by the highly entertaining "Baroness Bolsover."
The Baroness explained the history, etiquette and traditions of Afternoon Tea in a truly flamboyant and interactive way!
We learned that tea was introduced to the UK in the early 17th century, but only became widely accessible in the mid-18th century; during the reign of Queen Victoria. The Duchess of Bedford, Anna Maria Russell, accidentally invented Afternoon Tea.
These parties became popular not only for their savoury and sweet snacks and host blended teas, but also because they allowed women to enjoy wearing lighter and looser Tea Gowns which did not require a corset.
Tea Gowns were made of luxurious fabrics, but were also comfortable as they were a cross between a bathrobe and a gown.
Sandwiches, snacks and scones (the last were served plain - without jam and cream!) were served without any cutlery.
Besides a chance to socialise without men present, Victorian women also used these private gatherings to discuss important issues; such as women getting the vote.
Overall, it was informative and we had a lot of fun; which was the perfect way to start 2022!
